Plans for Plans

Every writer enjoys a different part of the process. For me it’s the planning stages. I can plot and outline till the cows come marching in. There’s something insanely fun about the discovery of new motivations, character quirks, and that fitting-it-all-together feeling I get from laying out the bones of a story .

The actual writing is never so streamlined. It’s like being a new parent and dreaming of how little Joan will attend just the right schools to one day become president. Except that usually little Joan falls in with the wrong crowd, gets a star tattoo over her eye, and decides to attend art school while trying to “find herself.”
