I’ve said it before, and I feel compelled to type it here again: first drafts are–for me anyway–simply long outlines. Perhaps this is because I write messily in the early stages. I’ve heard other writers, especially a few professionals, claim that their first drafts are very clean. What luxury! Once I’m done with a first draft of say 100,000 words, I can then begin the process of finding what it is I actually want to say.
